This lovely table had a typical dark brown stain, which was quite dull. There was nothing functionally wrong, nor did the table need any repairs, but I had a different vision for it; one that would celebrate the tabletop's grain in a fresh way. The top was given a chalk paint wash in grey and then top coated with a water based poly. The legs were painted with chalk paint and then given a light application of water based gel stain from General Finishes in walnut.  The end result is a lovely updated version of a classic console.
